Logo and History
We hope you like the PICEA logo. The round circle is meant to represent the world, criss-crossed with pine needles to form a network of vital and organic information in the pursuit of life, just like the vision of PICEA. "Picea" is the Latin name for "the evergreen" - spruce trees, cedar trees and many other pine-type trees. We like the connotations of growth, knowledge, business, life, sustainability, innovation and creativity that this represents, sometimes growing in soil that other plants would find less hospitable. This is, we believe, prophetic for environmental practitioners who are Christians.
The green PICEA is of course the archetypal color for creation and the environment; the logo itself is an embodiment of what we are trying to achieve. The last three decades have seen some amazing and innovative work by Christians in the area of environmental management and creation care. Organizations like A Rocha, Au Sable, Ecology Link, the
John Ray Initiative and many others have pioneered creation care, based on biblical tradition. The pioneers have been seeking after God-given hope and are dedicated to stewarding the planet.
The fruit of this labor is now being seen as a new generation of Christian earth keepers are starting to appear, theological colleges are offering courses in creation care, and more and more Christians are entering the "environmental" professions. Many individuals have felt the call of God by choosing courses and careers which have earth keeping as their focus. There are probably hundreds, if not thousands, of Christians across the globe who are either in, or are seeking to become involved in, one type of environmental profession or another.
PICEA is specifically for these people, to help strengthen them in their calling to this vital and important ministry area. The organization will be useful to the waste manager, the ecologist, the environmental lawyer, and many others, as well as those involved in sustainable development working to assist the global poor to combat climate change and the many other environmental challenges we face. This is an organization for professionals run by professionals. We hope that you will become a member, benefit, contribute, network and above all grow in your love for God, love for his world and creation, love for others and love for yourself as a golden jewel within that creation.
